I belive that if intelligent life from another planet would land on earth that we would know about it before it happened. They would then be able to block off the area they landed at so no civilians would go near them. Then the government would be able to negotiate with the martians.

First of all, if any sort of extraterrestrial object were headed towards the Earth, the United States especially, we would most likely be aware of its approach days before it made contact with us. I believe that the government would take immediate action to cover up the landing to reduce panic. I think that we would try to peacefully make contact with the aliens, but as we have learned from countless science fiction movies, it would never work. We would become fearful that the creatures are a threat to us. After all, what is more frightening than the unknown?

If aliens were to suddenly invade our planet, billions of people would be both panicked and curious. Seeing as the aliens are portrayed as more powerful than us, we would stand no chance against them and the human race would be in the hands of creatures who are fighting for their survival on this planet just as much as we are fighting for ours. But in the end, it would all come down to one thing; who wants to survive the most, us, or them?

Personally, I'd freak out. And I think most of the world would be divided between fear and intrigue.

First of all, you'd know that these aliens are smarter than us. They've made it millions of miles away from another planet, possibly another galaxy, in a manned aircraft, whereas humans have only gone to the moon. These creatures could easily take over our planet.
Second, why would they have wanted to come to Earth? Have they been watching us? Would they come in peace or would they want to totally destroy us like in the book?

I think, the U.S. at least, would want to try and make peace with them and then try and form a connection and find out what their purpose is on Earth. Whatever the outcome of that first encounter would be would determine future relationships with aliens.
