Return of the Native, Character Watcher, Pd. 3

The character that I would like to look at is Thomasin Yeobright. She is the niece of Mrs. Yeobright and had been away from her home because she was to be married. Her aunt did not approve of the marriage. After she changed the location of where she would like to be married on the day of her wedding, her groom forgot to get a new licence for the new location. So it seems to me that Thomasin is a spoiled girl, and always has to get what she wants. Although the fact that they have to postpone their wedding is embarrassing, why are they trying to hide it from the rest of the towns folk? They planned to get married the following day, so it really shouldn’t be such an ordeal. Why is Thomasin along with her aunt so intent on hiding this from everyone else?

I think that they want to hide the wedding ordeal because they don’t want to seem irresponsible and dumb for not having a perfect wedding. The wedding is important to them because they need to be looked at as a respectable family, not a family where the son in law is too irresponsible to renew the wedding license, then the townsfolk will think he is immature and the family is to be looked down upon.

I think the reason that Thomasin is so upset is not just because of the liscence. I think that she found out about Damon cheating on her or she found out that he still had feelings for Eustacia. She does not want everyone finding out that he has an interest in Eustacia because it is very unacceptable and embarassing to tell people that information. Thomasin and her aunt seem very close relationshipwise, and maybe the reason her aunt showed up to the bonfire one of the first night in the book was because she knew of the mishap and she was trying too look for her niece and try to comfort her.

Wow, I just had my whole response typed, I hit a key, and it dissapeared. Cmon. Here it goes again….

I think that Thomasin’s Aunt, not Thomasin is the one worried about what others think. Like Laurisa said, maybe her Aunt thinks that people will think that they are disorganized or something, I don’t know. It seems sort of silly to me that people would get upset over a delayed marriage. Maybe in the time period a delayed marriage meant that things were going badly between the bride and groom. But I really don’t think that Thomasin is nearly as worried about what others think as her Aunt.

Adam: More. Deepen your understanding of her character. And ask a question that will garner more response.

To the rest: Your responses seem very superficial and if you think something might be important about the time period, then look it up!
