I think he knows that it is dangerous and that they need to get away. From the backround knowledge we know (the readers) that he survives the war with the aliens. We, the readers, know that somehow the narrator overcomes the aliens. I think that he runs away becuase he ids going to think of a plan to oversome the aliens. He also might be trying to set an example for other people. His background in astronomy backs up my theory. I think he will try to run away, like he is now when the first capsule opened, but will then figure out a way to defeat these aliens and save the planet. The narrator seems to be a smart guy. Unlike his friend who got killed, he knows to watch and observe the aliens first before jumping in and making contact with them. This may serve as a helpful attribute in finding a way to defeat the aliens. The narrator says he used to pretend as a little boy of fighting off aliens and saving the planet. Well, now that he's older and may have the chance to do so, he might act this way as a way of being a hero. This is doubtful though to the way he runs from the danger. Instead of saving the planet, he might just focus on keeping his wife safe. I think he has enough courage to do that.
